Simon the tortoise wins Zoopolis 500

One of the longest running traditions of the Indianapolis Zoo, the 43rd Zoopolis 500 took place today from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event is presented by the American Dairy Association Indiana. Driver Tony Kanaan served as the Grand Marshall of the race and has for several years now.

Five tortoises took part in the race: Simon, Helio, Romain, Kyle and Scott. When the green flag dropped at 11:30 a.m., there was not much action at first, other than a few tortoises wiggling out of their racing outfits.

Then, Simon began making his way off of the racing platform and ended up cutting off Scott. As the race continued, Simon was the only tortoise who ventured off of the racing platform, though he did try to escape the race course a few times.

Once Simon was set back on course, there was no competition as he made his way across the finish line and won the Zoopolis 500. After his victory, he and his fellow tortoise racers enjoyed a tray full of fruit.

If Simon the tortoise’s victory is any indication, then we might just see Simon Pagenaud cross the finish line first at the Indianapolis 500 on May 29.

For those who missed the riveting race, it was live-streamed by WRTV.

During the Zoopolis 500, Tony Kanaan and two of his children spectate the race together.
